Understanding Urban Noise: Insights from the Net4Cities Noise Monitoring Webinar

As part of its mission to better understand environmental health risks in European cities, Net4Cities hosted a public Noise Monitoring Webinar – “Noise nuisance in a city that never sleeps” on October 7, 2025. The event brought together experts and city representatives to discuss the growing importance of monitoring and managing traffic noise as a key factor affecting public health and urban well-being.

Tackling Urban Noise Through Better Monitoring

Net4Cities is deploying colocated noise monitoring terminals with traffic counting capacity in 11 cities across Europe. These deployments support a data-driven approach to understanding how traffic and urban activity contribute to noise exposure and its health impacts.

During the webinar, participants heard from:

  • Sarah Weidenfeld, a DLR noise expert, who presented the latest findings on the relationship between traffic noise and health.
  • David Capdevilla, a noise expert from the City of Barcelona, who shared the city’s experience with building and managing an extensive noise-monitoring network, along with lessons learned from years of implementation.

The session concluded with a lively Q&A, where participants from across Europe engaged directly with the speakers to discuss practical applications and challenges in noise management.

Making Noise Visible

By combining innovative noise monitoring tools with collaboration among European cities, Net4Cities aims to strengthen local capacities for managing environmental noise – making this often-overlooked pollutant more visible and better understood.
