Innovations in Environmental Noise Monitoring: From Class 1 to Low-Cost Sensors

Thursday, 11 December 2025 | 10:00 – 11:00 CET | Online via Zoom

How are cities and researchers using new sensor technologies to better understand noise in our urban environments? This upcoming webinar explores the next generation of environmental noise monitoring – from high-precision Class 1 instruments to flexible, affordable sensor systems that make widespread, continuous measurement possible.

As part of the Net4Cities project, experts from Cirrus Research and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will share their experiences applying both professional-grade and low-cost solutions in real-world settings. The session will include insights from ongoing deployments of co-located sensors across European cities and discuss how integrating different sensor types can expand monitoring networks and improve data quality.

What to Expect:

  • Craig Storey (Cirrus Research)

Noise Monitoring Systems That Meet International Standards

Learn about Class 1 instrumentation, ISO standards, and the technical requirements for achieving accurate and reliable noise data in professional monitoring systems.

  • Dr. Arne Henning (DLR – German Aerospace Center)

Advanced Traffic-Noise Monitoring Utilizing Combined Low-Cost Traffic and Noise Sensors

Discover how integrated low-cost sensor networks can capture both traffic and acoustic data, enabling detailed analysis of noise sources and supporting model validation.

💬 Q&A Session – Engage directly with the speakers and explore the future of multi-scale noise monitoring.

Who Should Attend:

Researchers, city representatives, environmental monitoring professionals, and policymakers interested in noise management, data integration, and sensor innovation across European cities.

Laura Gualda: „Don’t ignore any spark of interest you have!“

Laura Gualda is in her second year of PhD in Transport Systems Engineering at the Technical University of Munich. She works as a research associate in the MI-TRAP project, developing models to estimate traffic and its related emissions in urban areas. Her STEM story is about overcoming the fear of not being good enough for science. And following that spark of interest anyway.
