Innovations in Environmental Noise Monitoring: Insights from the Net4Cities Noise Instrumentation Webinar
As part of its ongoing webinar series on environmental monitoring in European cities, Net4Cities hosted a webinar on 11 December 2025 entitled “Innovations in Environmental Noise Monitoring: From Class 1 to Low-Cost Sensors.” The session explored how next-generation sensor technologies are transforming environmental noise monitoring, from high-precision Class 1 instruments to flexible and affordable low-cost sensor systems.
Environmental noise remains a major health burden in urban areas. To address this challenge, Net4Cities is supporting the deployment of co-located noise and traffic sensors across partner cities, enabling scalable, data-driven monitoring of urban sound environments.
Expert Insights from Research and Industry
During the webinar, participants heard from:
- Craig Storey (Cirrus Research)
on professional noise monitoring systems, Class 1 instrumentation, and international standards. - Dr. Arne Henning (DLR – German Aerospace Center)
on advanced traffic-noise monitoring using combined low-cost traffic and acoustic sensor networks.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A.
